One thing I had observed in seasons five and six was that for the most part, the episode quality had vastly improved over the early seasons. The good episodes have always been good, but the bad ones in seasons one and two were a combination of forgettable and unforgettably atrocious.
'Alpha' reminded me of some of those runs of awful episodes in the first two seasons.
This episode was kind of a mess. The story was not particularly interesting and the mystery was pretty easy to figure out early in the episode, so there was little tension. I never cared about the characters that much, especially Karin Berquist, whose only real purpose seemed to be to again make Scully jealous. Because we haven't seen that enough.
The story reminded me a little of the first season Buffy episode, 'The Pack', in which the zookeeper tried to become a hyena. And it was about as compelling. But it was also similar to other X-Files episodes already, too. And the only ones I can think of were similarly bad. 'Shapes', 'Fearful Symmetry', and 'Teso Dos Bichos' all had elements that are repeated here unnecessarily. I really never wanted to think about those episodes again, to be perfectly honest.
And this one is pretty unmemorable, too, so I'm not going to waste much time on it. I kind of wish I hadn't wasted 45 minutes watching it. The fact that Detweiler was the dog was obvious pretty much from the beginning, and as a result, there was really no reason to watch Mulder and Scully (but mostly Mulder) figure that out.
I don't think I have anything else to add. I'd like to stretch this into a longer post somehow, but I just can't. This episode was terrible. Done.
