The X-Files Season 2, Episode 15: Fresh Bones

Zombies and voodoo, what could possibly go right?

Very little, apparently. I thought 'Fresh Bones' was all over the place, and I'm not sure I really followed what was going on.

And for some reason, X showed up, despite this being otherwise unconnected to any of the past storylines. I mean, don't get me wrong, I like that kind of cross-continuity, but why would he waste his time on this?

I'm having some trouble re-watching this episode, honestly. It's just not very good, and it's proving very hard to unravel.

It's also kind of boring? I mean, I'm 20 minutes into rewatching and basically nothing has happened. The plot has barely moved forward at all. Am I the only one who found this episode so completely uninteresting?

The most important thing I got out of this episode is that Mulder's trenchcoat has a red lining, which makes it look a lot like a really fancy billowing cape when he runs. He's SuperMulder!

We do get some freakiness with people's food (fortunately, having already been a fan of Fringe, I know better than to eat while watching sci-fi shows), and some people returning from the dead, and an incredibly disturbing and freaky scene with Scully in the car, but largely nothing otherwise compelling to write about.

As far as I can tell, though, Colonel Wharton is a racist douchebag who oppresses the refugees, has a bone to pick with Bauvais, and tries to cover up the abuse by using Haitian Vodou to kill soldiers who were planning on testifying against him, and essentially framing the refugees for it. Maybe?

I don't know, there really wasn't much holding this together. I just couldn't follow it at all, but at least there's a satisfyingly creepy ending with Wharton being buried alive (or resurrected in his coffin), because damn that's horrifying.

But I can't figure out who really did what to whom, or where Chester came from (since he apparently died in the riot long before Mulder and Scully arrived in North Carolina). Though I'm assuming Chester and the black cat were the same character? Was that part of the magic?

It's really not clear. Probably best to just move on to the next one. (And they were doing so well, too! This episode was a serious misstep.)
